The Berkshires

For visitors to this storied region of Massachusetts, those two words evoke memories of beautiful green hills, quaint villages, picture-perfect mill towns, and gently meandering country roads—a gem in the crown of New England’s many magnificent landscapes. But tucked amid those hills is something that makes the Berkshires shine above all—a glittering array of world-class museums, theaters, festivals, artist’s studios and writer’s homes. And they are all within a short motorcoach drive of Tanglewood’s Main Gate.

A visit to the Norman Rockwell Museum is a must-see on many groups’ agendas. Rockwell established his studio in lovely Stockbridge in 1953, and your group can visit that very studio
on the grounds of the Museum, along with the world’s largest collection of Rockwell paintings. Head to the Arrowhead farmhouse and stand in the room where Herman Melville wrote Moby Dick, just six miles from Tanglewood. The Lincoln Memorial may be in Washington D.C., but its story begins in the Berkshires at Chesterwood, the estate and newly-restored studio of sculptor Daniel Chester French. And be sure to visit Edith Wharton’s magnificent self-designed home and gardens, The Mount, just down the road in Lenox, where she penned The House of Mirth and other stories. Many of American greatest novels were forged right here in the Berkshires.

Cutting edge contemporary art breaks out of big-city lofts and finds a home in the Berkshires at MASSMoCA, the largest contemporary art museum in the US. Explore the roots of 20th Century modern art through the works of Picasso, Braque, Leger and others at the delightful Frelinghuysen Morris House & Studio. And don’t miss the stunning new galleries at the world-renowned Clark Art Institute. Visit the country’s longest running dance festival at Jacob’s Pillow, and be sure to catch great theater at the Berkshire Theater Group, Barrington Stage Company, Shakespeare & Company, and the Williamstown Theater Festival. Your group can also explore the unique natural beauty of the Berkshires at the Berkshire Botanical Gardens, comprised of 23 distinct gardens highlighting western Massachusetts.

Whether your group is coming for a day trip or staying an entire week, the opportunities are endless to turn your Tanglewood visit into a grand Berkshire adventure.
